Illustration by Ken Syakira WangsaatmadjaArtist Statement Inspired by the voices of the young women in the Soenting Melajoe columns, I chose to embody their collective spirit through a single character: a young Minang girl radiating boundless energy and compassion. She is the face of a generation hungry for knowledge. Passionate, studious, and endearingly clumsy, a reminder that the teenage spark transcends generations. Though she’s missed the post’s deadline, she remains undeterred. She runs, chasing the mail carrier, fueled by the urgent need to ensure her voice reaches other girls. In bringing her to ‘life’, I found myself rooting for her every step of the way.
